Home Care for Veterans: Caring for Those Who Cared for Our Country
Military service and caregiving are two of the most honorable duties a person can undertake. Our veterans have served our country proudly and they deserve not only the best home care services as they age, but also quality employment when they return home from service.
At Home Independent Living is taking that sentiment to heart and we are working hard to ensure that Syracuse area veterans receive the compassionate care they deserve. We are also dedicated to hiring veterans to care for veterans. The bond that veterans share is a special one and we believe that common bond can enhance care for the elderly or disabled veteran, while also enriching the work experience of the veteran caregiver.
Additionally, our team connects veterans and their spouses to organizations in our area that can help them obtain their Aid and Attendance benefits in order to receive the care and assistance they need to remain at home as they age.
What is Veterans Aid and Attendance?
Veterans Aid and Attendance is a benefit paid by Veterans Affairs (VA) to veterans, veteran spouses or surviving spouses. It is paid in addition to a veteran’s basic pension, and is for applicants who need financial help for in–home care services. Aid and Attendance benefits are paid to those applicants who:
- Are eligible for a VA pension
- Meet service requirements
- Meet certain disability requirements
- Meet income and asset limitations
Often, vets and/or their spouses must wait for several months until the paperwork for the Aid and Attendance benefit is processed before they can begin receiving home care services. Through our veterans’ program, we help streamline the process in order to determine benefit qualifications immediately. At Home Independent Living can also fund services before the paperwork has been processed so that veterans and their families can start home care services immediately.
